Hello,
My name is Lucian and I welcome you to a blog for people who’ve stained a neuron or two in a lighter shade of green and found out it just won’t come off.
Personally, I’ve always had a soft spot for nature and all things related, creepy crawlers included. Whenever I hear news of species endangered because of human greed, I feel angry – especially when greed goes hand in hand with stupidity or ignorance. This is why it wasn’t a big surprise when this fascination for nature changed into a passion for environmental politics and governance as time passed and I became schooled (or brainwashed?) in Politics.
Now, don’t be put off by the wordage. As fancy shmancy as it all sounds, it’s a genuine interest and it’s genuinely interesting, I promise you. So interesting, that I’ve decided to start blogging about it.
Now that I’ve given you a background – fuzzy as it may be – I’ll give you some expectations, mostly my own, but hopefully matching yours. Well, here it goes … the three things you should expect of me:
1. An honestly admitted bias
I’m what some would call a light green.
I’m green because we need to account for the environment if we want to live better, healthier and not have the entire global economy slowly crumble as its environmental foundation weakens. All that we’ve built as a global civilization depends on the environment and especially on its stable patterns. Take that away along with all the services that “mother nature” is stoically providing – for now at least – and we’ll be facing both huge expenses and gargantuan trouble, too.
I’m light because we need radical changes, but unfortunately cannot have them. Stability is the key word again … all the structure we’ve built was designed with an aversion to transformation (some call it endurance), not to mention a mind of its own. So, before any big changes can occur, we need to give small, reasonable and definitely less emotional (toughest of all) proof that most people will live a better life if they go green soon. Otherwise, the eco-momentum of ideas that’s been sweeping throughout the world lately will not live long enough to make into the long history.
2. Information
News, articles, research, you name it. I’ll try to bring in as many perspectives as possible and make sense out of their differences. This of course means thinking (and often being wrong, I’m afraid) and seeing the patterns and structures behind the information, as well as the hidden agendas. Remember that all I post is opion, more or less firm. Have a mind of your own and dispute me, so we can prove each other wrong and get wiser in the process.
3. Positive thinking
Most of all, this blog is a skeptic’s struggle to be hopeful. Solving the environmental issues that we face is a hearculean task, but I won’t rant on how doomed we are, no matter how tempting that may be. Instead, here’s my promise: I’ll discuss solutions, not problems, based on a hope that systems thinking along with breaking down disorganised majorities into organised minorities can go a long way in bringing about change and strengthening social entrepreneurship.
Now, the last words I would like to say are that I am, by and large, not writing for myself. This blog is for its readers and without them, it shouldn’t exist. So, whenever you disagree, have questions or have a better idea, just say so. Feed-back, comments, suggestions are always welcome.
This ends my attempt at creating a manifesto and, with an invitation to you your own green matter, I welcome you to mine …
